The style icon Iris Apfel born on August 29 1921 in Astoria, Queens, New York, she grey up as an only child her father Samuel Barrel and her mother Sadye how both were jewish. Her father owned a glass and mirror business and her mother owned a fashion boutique.
Iris were used to creativity in her childhood, so when she decided to study art history in New York that wasn’t to far from her knowledge. Later on she started working for Women’s Wear Daily, and for the interior designer Elinor Johnson and as an assistant to the illustrator Robert Goodman. So Iris knew her way around designs and creativity.
Iris got married in 1948 to the love of her life, Carl Apfel how unfortunately died in August 2015 after a marriage of 67 years. Together they started a textile firm called Old World Weavers, which meant that they traveled the world together and began buying pieces of clothes that Iris started wearing into the high society parties of their clients.
Iris began in the years from 1950-1992 to take part in many different design projects and in 2012 at the age of 90, she was a visiting professor at University of Texas at Austin, lecturing about style and fashion and was in 2013 listed by The Guardian as one of the fifty best dressed over 50s..
Today Iris is a very well-known person, especially for her style of mixing and matching accessories. She is one of the few people who can wear lots of different bangles, bracelets and necklaces and still look upper cool and stylish. One of her well-known quotes says that; “There’s no how-to road map to style. It’s about self-expression and above all attitude”.
She is a very inspiring woman, a very wise collector and a great shopper who understands that fashion you can buy but style is something you possess, as she says. So don’t be afraid of showing your own style, do what ever feels good and mix what ever feels hot for you.
See the pictures below and fell free to get inspired by in my opinion “The Queen of Accessories”.
How cool is the background in this picture? She is so hip and the way she mixes colors is just amazing. I love the orange color together with the black necklaces and bangles.
I love how well it looks with the two bangles in silver to her cowboy look.
This look is amazing! The turquoise necklace looks fabulous together with the brownish long fur.
I love the way she has kept this look simple. The color tones of her bangles, statement necklace and her glasses looks so stylish and elegant together with the dark blue jacket.
How chic is this?! Leopard print on the wall, a lions head on the couch and the golden colors of her jewelry’s sums is all up!
Orange and turquise colors are one of my favorite colors to mix. Iris does is so well that is docent even looks to much. I can’t believe that this woman is 92 years old. What a role model!
This is such a cool look! The red color on both her wrist from her bangles, her necklaces and from her lip color is just so well thought through.
The black fur around her shoulders together with the black necklace and her glasses looks very well. She is such an inspirering person and has the ability to look very elegant whiles there is a lot going on.
